18 killed as gantry collapses at factory
AT LEAST 18 people were killed yesterday when a gantry collapsed at a factory in south China’s Guangdong Province, a local government official said.
The huge metal structure, which a firefighter said weighed about 80 tons, fell onto a temporary building at an engineering plant in Mayong, said Luo Bin, deputy secretary-general of the municipal government of Dongguan, which administers the township.
The collapse happened during a thunderstorm, he said.
As well as the 18 people killed, as of 6pm yesterday, 18 others were being treated for their injuries in hospital, said Luo.
Four of the those hurt are in a serious condition, he said.
A total of 139 people were in the building at the time of the collapse, 88 of whom managed to escape unaided. Aside from the 36 people killed or injured, 15 were rescued and given a clean bill of health, Luo said.
