18 killed in 2 road accidents

TWO road accidents claimed the lives of 18 people on China's roads yesterday.

In the first, four people died and more than 70 injured after two coaches and a truck were involved in a collision on an expressway in Guizhou Province yesterday morning, local authorities said.

The accident happened at 6:30am when a long-distance coach overturned, leading to a collision with another coach and a truck on a section of the Lanzhou-Haikou Expressway in Zunyi City, according to the city's fire department.

The more than 70 injured, including one critically, were taken to two local hospitals.

An initial investigation indicated that the Hainan-registered coach travelling to Chongqing overturned on the expressway that was slippery following rain.

Two passengers on the overturned coach and the driver of the other bus died at the scene, said firefighters. Another passenger died later in hospital. The expressway was closed for a time.

Meanwhile, 14 people died and many were injured in a road accident in Dalian, northeast China's Liaoning Province at around 6pm yesterday, local authorities said.

An investigation into the accident has begun, said officials.
