18 killed in 3rd mine explosion in a month

AN explosion at a coal mine has killed 18 people and injured 12 others in northeast China's Jilin Province, local authorities said yesterday.

The blast occurred around 1:26pm on Saturday at the Qingxing Coal Mine in Helong City.

A total of 73 people were working underground when the blast happened, and 55 of them were lifted to safety.

The injured are receiving treatment at a local hospital but their injuries are not life threatening.

Rescue work ended early yesterday morning, and the managers of the mine are in police custody.

An investigation launched by the provincial government found that the mine had failed to eradicate potential hazards identified after previous accidents. Those hazards led to the latest blast. A further investigation is under way.

It is the third coal mine gas explosion in a month in the province.

Explosions at the Babao Coal Mine in Baishan on March 29 and April 1 killed a total of 53 workers.
