18 students injured in Hangzhou bus crash

EIGHTEEN middle school students were injured when a minibus collided with another bus and overturned at an intersection in Hangzhou in east China's Zhejiang Province yesterday.

The injured are being treated in hospital and were all in a stable condition, Hangzhou City officials said.

The accident occurred at about 5:40pm when the school minibus turned left at an intersection near Hangfu Road and was hit by another bus, causing it to overturn, an official said.

Chen Ligen, 42, told Shanghai Daily that his daughter, 13-year-old Chen Hangjuan, suffered cuts and bruises to her face and neck from the shattered glasses of the minibus after it was hit.

"The bus was running at a rather high speed at the intersection, and it didn't even slow down when hitting the school bus," Chen said.

At the No. 1 Hangzhou People's Hospital, a father surnamed Zhang said his daughter, 14, had injuries to her right leg.

"When I rushed to the scene, gasoline and blood was split all over the ground," Zhang said.

"The front of the bus was seriously damaged while the minibus was lying overturned on the roadside, with glass scattered everywhere," he said.

Some parents said the other bus was rushing to cross the intersection before the lights changed.

Some students and their parents said there were at least 30 students on the minibus, but later they changed that number to 18 - its maximum capacity. The number of students was revised by parents after Hangzhou officials revealed the minibus had been hired by the parents.

A vice principal surnamed Bian at Zhoupu Middle School told the Zhejiang Online website that the school did not have its own bus so some parents had hired the minibus.

Zhang said parents appealed to the school four years ago for a licensed school bus but the school hadn't agreed to their request.

Investigations are under way to check whether the minibus was legal and whether the bus driver had a license.

The accident was the latest in a number of school bus accidents in China.

At least 15 children were killed and eight injured when a school bus overturned in Xuzhou in east China's Jiangsu Province last Monday.
