180 villagers contract hepatitis C from unlicensed clinic

A total of 180 people are confirmed to have been infected with the hepatitis C virus in eastern Anhui Province and its neighboring Henan Province, and an unlicensed clinic on their border is believed to be the source of infection.

In Guoyang County in Anhui, 76 people, mostly children under 10 years old, have tested positive for Hepatitis C in a preliminary screening. Eight of them are being treated in a local hospital. No one is in serious condition, local health officials said.

The clinic in Miaoqian Town, Yongcheng City has been shut down after its owner, Wu Wenyi, was found to be a quack doctor without any medical license, Beijing News reported today.

Nearly all the infected people said they had intravenous injections at Wu's clinic. Angry parents said Wu used the same syringe needle on many children without sterilizing it, causing cross-infection.

Health authorities have questioned Wu to find his connection with the viral outbreak but they haven't found any incriminating evidence against him, said the director of Yongcheng City Public Health Bureau.
