186 people arrested on pollution charges
A TOTAL of 186 people in 109 cases were arrested last year on charges of environmental pollution, environment minister Zhou Shengxian said yesterday.
He did not say how many people were convicted.
Environmental authorities closed down more than 3,500 businesses in the year and handled 6,499 cases. Of those, 706 were passed to the police, which was more than the total for the previous 10 years combined, Zhou said.
Meanwhile, procuratorial agencies will intensify their work to investigate and prosecute environment-related crimes, including official misconduct, according to a document issued at a press conference held yesterday by the Supreme People’s Procuratorate.
In the first four months of this year, 349 people were investigated or prosecuted for suspected crimes of dereliction of duty regarding environmental issues, the document said.
In several cases, officials were found to have failed to perform their administrative duty in handling cases, said Li Zhongcheng, deputy head of the SPP’s tribunal in charge of duty dereliction prosecutions.
Some accepted bribes, while others abused their power to approve polluting projects, Li said.
From January 2013 through April of this year, 1,545 people were investigated, the SPP document said.
In the whole of last year, charges were brought against 20,969 people for crimes related to causing damage to the environment, it said.
