189,000 evacuated from storm
MORE than 189,000 people had been evacuated to safe areas in the southern island province of Hainan by early yesterday morning, after tropical storm Nock-Ten hit the island late on Friday afternoon, China's flood control authorities said yesterday.
It brought strong winds and heavy rains, leaving two people killed and 148 homes damaged along coastal villages in Hainan's Guangcun Town, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said.
But the headquarters received no damage reports from nearby Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which also experienced heavy rainfall.
Early yesterday morning, the storm entered the sea in the east of Beibu Bay after passing Hainan's Changjiang County and is expected to head for coastal areas north of Vietnam, the headquarters said.
Nock-Ten, the eighth storm - and the most powerful one - to hit China this year, was recorded as packing winds of up to 28 meters per second when it hit Longlou Town in the city of Wenchang at 5:40pm on Friday.
At least 31 people in the Philippines died as a result of the storm.
Heavy rains will hit China's southern coastal areas, northern regions and parts of the Sichuan Basin over the coming three days, the meteorological authority said yesterday.
Southern coastal areas of the provinces of Guangdong and Hainan, as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, will see massive downpours, as Nock-Ten, continues westward, the National Meteorological Center said.
Heavy rains will also hit western, southern and southeastern regions of northwest China as well as the central eastern part of the Sichuan Basin, according to the center.
Thunderstorms will also hit the southwestern part of Shaanxi Province and the Liaodong Peninsula.
Scorching heat will continue in most areas south of the Yangtze River, the northern area of Guangxi and the eastern part of Guizhou Province with temperatures predicted to exceed 35 degrees Celsius.
