19 Chinese tourists disappear in S. Korea

A group of 19 Chinese tourists went missing the second day after they arrived in South Korea last Saturday, the Chinese Embassy in Seoul confirmed today.

According to the South Korean newspaper Yonhap News, the group took a cruise ship from Dalian, Liaoning Province on December 28 and arrived in Incheon, South Korea the next day.

However, they went missing after spending one night in a local hostel, the Yonhap News reported.

Online allegations claimed that all these Chinese are from the coal-rich Shanxi Province. But a Shanxi tourism official denied it, saying none of them are Shanxi natives, the China News Service reported today.

Initial investigation showed the tour guide was unlikely to cover up their escape and Chinese entry-and-exit authorities are investigating if any middlemen were involved, the report said.

Earlier media reports said some Chinese travelers abandoned their tour groups and worked illegally in South Korea where one could earn up to 11,700 yuan per month.
