19 detained for blast, shootings
POLICE in southwest China's Yunnan Province have detained 19 suspects for deliberately causing a coal mine explosion and shooting their rivals in a row over the boundaries of a coal mine.
The incident left nine people dead and 48 injured.
Some of the nine miners, previously thought to have died in the shed explosion, were killed by gun shots, local police told Xinhua news agency yesterday.
"Autopsies show some of them were gunned down before the blast," said Lu Qingwei, head of public security of Luxi County, where the mine is located.
But Lu declined to give more details about the case. Investigations are underway and the findings may be announced today, Lu said.
Police said they are still investigating the fatal explosion and shootings near the entrance of the Xiaosongdi Coal Mine in Luxi County, Honghe Prefecture, at 9am last Thursday, a local news website, Yunnan.com, reported yesterday
Almost all the victims were miners hired by Zheng Chun-yun, who owns the Yuejin Coal Mine. Zheng said the attack was planned by his rival Wang Yongfu, the contractor of the adjacent Xiaosongdi Coal Mine.
Wang allegedly ordered his workers to infringe on the boundaries of Zheng's coal mine.
The report said Zheng had complained to the local land and resources authorities about Wang's misconduct and an investigation showed Wang had crossed the demarcation by at least 660 meters, which led to a loss of millions of yuan in revenue for Zheng.
Wang was ordered by officials to withdraw his workers from Zheng's coal mine by November 3 and pay compensation to Zheng.
Zheng led a group of approximately 80 workers to Wang's coal mine to collect the compensation on Thursday. When they arrived, explosives stored in a nearby shed were detonated. Some of the survivors were then shot in an °?ambush, said villagers who saw the attack.
Wang Guisheng, told reporters the gunmen appeared like professional attackers as the victims were killed with one shot to the head or chest.
Police said more suspects are expected to be detained as the investigation continues.
