19 killed, 50 injured in village fireworks blast

AN explosion triggered by fireworks has killed 19 people and injured 50 in south China's Guangdong Province, local authorities said yesterday.

The explosion occurred at Shiqiaotou Village in Puning City's Junbu Township about 8pm on Friday, the provincial public security department and Puning City government said.

Villager Yang Junshu and his family were setting off firecrackers in front of his house when it is believed the flames ignited other fireworks on the ground. This caused a huge explosion, said a witness surnamed Yang, whose house is about 200 meters away from the blast site.

The bodies of 13 people were found at the scene on Friday night and six people later died in hospital.

Police said two people had been detained but didn't reveal their identities.

Police and work safety officials have started a safety check on the sale, storage, transportation and use of fireworks in Puning. Officials said they would close all unlicensed retailers.

Fireworks are widely used to celebrate the Lunar New Year, the most important holiday in China which ends today.
