1,900 detained in fake drugs crackdown

CHINESE police have detained more than 1,900 people suspected of making or selling fake drugs in a nationwide bust.

Also, 1.16 billion yuan (US$182 million) worth of fake medicine and related trademark logos, packages and instruction manuals had been seized, the Ministry of Public Security said in a statement yesterday.

The ministry said that on the basis of previous investigations, more than 18,000 police were mobilized on July 25 to crack down on gangs involved in the production and distribution of fake medicines.

The seized drugs were illegally advertised for the treatment of hypertension, diabetes, skin diseases and other complicated illnesses or cancer. Such drugs either delayed treatment or caused damage to the liver and kidneys, and could cause myocardial infarction or cardiac arrest, the ministry statement said.

The statement acknowledged that manufacturing methods had become more "elusive and deceptive" to escape police raids. It said people reporting suspected fake-medicine crimes could get rewards of up to 50,000 yuan.
