1m left without water
SOME 1 million residents living in the east of Zhengzhou City, capital of Henan Province, have no tap water, after a pipeline burst.
This comes just five days after 800,000 residents in the southwest of the city had their supply reconnected following a similar blowout.
The latest blowout - the third in the city this year - occurred in a main tap water pipeline owned by Yuanshui Water Plant, at around 1pm on Monday, reported local website portal Dahe.com yesterday.
The plant has suspended water supplies so that workers can repair the damaged section of the pipeline.
Leaked water quickly flooded streets and buildings around the water plant. The first floor of a nearby office building, which was used by high-tech companies, has been flooded, ruining computers, fax machines and other electronic equipment.
A manager of a trade company based in the building said the company suffered losses of at least 300,000 yuan (US$45,146).
Manager Zhang Lei said staff could not prevent the damage as 2-meter-high waves descended on the building.
As streets were flooded, some three-wheeled vehicle owners saw a business opportunity ferrying pedestrians at the cost of 5 yuan a trip.
Repairs were still on-going.
The burst pipeline in the east of the city was repaired last Thursday. While it was out of action, residents had to rely on bottled water for more than one day.
