2 Chinese books win international design awards
TWO Chinese books have been named among 14 award winners in an annual design competition held in Germany.
“Order — The Story of Fangyuan Bookshop” collected a gold medal, which is the second-highest award at the “Best Book Design from all over the World” contest, while “Pleasure of Learning” won a bronze.
According to the website of Stiftung Buchkunst (Book Art Foundation), which has overseen the event since 1991, the “international competition (which has been held annually in Leipzig since 1963) assesses books that have previously been judged and singled out for merit by specialist panels in their countries of origin.”
The two Chinese titles had earlier been named winners of The Beauty of Books in China awards, the Shanghai Press and Publication Administration, which organizes that event, said yesterday.
“Order — The Story of Fangyuan Bookshop,” which tells the story of a private art bookshop in Xi’an, northeast China’s Shaanxi Province, was designed by Li Jin, the administration said, without elaborating.
“Pleasure of Learning,” which is about an artist’s reflection on learning, was designed by Qu Minmin and Jiang Qian.
This year’s event attracted about 700 books from 32 countries. As well as the top prize — the “Goldene Letter” — the jury awards one gold, two silver and five bronze medals, as well as five honorary appreciations.
An awards ceremony will be held next month at a book fair in Leipzig, according to the Stiftung Buchkunst website.
