2 alive after week underground
TWO workers have been rescued 188 hours after they were trapped in a coal mine collapse in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in which eight people died, rescuers said yesterday.
The two were among 22 miners trapped after the mine, operated by the Guangxi Heshan Coal Mining Company, collapsed on July 2 after days of heavy rain.
A total of 71 miners were underground when the accident took place in the Laibin City mine - 49 managed to escape.
Ye Fangyong, deputy commander of the rescue headquarters, said the survivors were found in a ventilation shaft 320 meters underground. It was filled with sludge after the collapse, but there was still room for fresh air.
Ye said four more miners trapped at a work platform 390 meters underground may survive because that section also had some space for fresh air.
Rescuers say the chances of the remaining eight being found alive are not good.
But the rescuers have not given up, Ye said, and are using scientific measures such as a radar device to help indicate the exact locations of the trapped men.
Rescuers have been offered 2 million yuan (US$309,406) for each miner they pull out alive.
Yang Yaodong, director of the mining company, said it would do its utmost to rescue the remaining trapped workers.
The two survivors were named as 41-year-old Liu Jiagan and 35-year-old Qin Hongdang. Both are in a stable condition.
They told rescuers they had survived by drinking spring water that seeped through the top of the shaft.
Rescuers said yesterday they had heard faint sounds coming from the two trapped miners at 3am.
The rescue evoked memories of last year's Wangjialing Coal Mine rescue in north Chibna's Shanxi Province, where a total of 115 workers were pulled from the flooded coal mine about 179 hours after the accident occurred.
