2 cops guilty in deadly torture, but walk free
A 65-YEAR-OLD father whose son died during police interrogation was still appealing a court sentence that let two policemen walk free after they were convicted of torturing his son.
Qin Chunfa, father of Qin Sanzi, who died two days after being wrongly arrested in central China's Hunan Province for a robbery in 2007, said he could not believe the "ridiculous verdicts," Beijing-based Democracy and Law magazine reported yesterday.
In the first trial, Xie Runlin and Xiao Congbo were found guilty of torturing Qin Sanzi. But they were set free because the "two policemen helped to solve several other cases during probation."
The verdict confirmed that Xie and Xiao hanged Qin Sanzi on a beam and beat him up.
They also forced Qin Sanzi to stand like a horse for a whole night while whipping him, according to the magazine report.
Prosecutors appealed the sentence.
The same court only slightly toughened the penalty last month, with Xie sentenced to six months' jail but getting one-year probation and exempting Xiao from penalty. If Xie does not break the law again within a year, he will not have to go to jail.
The court said Qin Sanzi died of a heart disorder, citing an autopsy report.
Qin Chunfa began taking his case by petition to Beijing in 2008, but was intercepted and sent back home as soon as he got off the train.
Local officials promised him that there would be justice if he stayed at home and waited for the second trial.
