2 cops on wanted list for beating a cabbie

TWO traffic policemen in central China's Henan Province are on the wanted list after they beat up a taxi driver and fled. Yucheng County Police Bureau pledge to punish them seriously, the local Dahe News reported today.

The 24-year-old taxi driver, Ping Jingwei, said he was beaten by two men in police uniforms on May 10. They stopped his car by throwing water bottles at him and began to abuse and punch him after he came out.

"They didn't let up even though my face was bleeding," Jing told the newspaper. "Many witnesses felt indignant and reported to police."

As the crowd grew, these two men stopped beating and escaped from the scene. Ping said he could smell alcohol from them. "They were very drunk and many witnesses can prove it," he said.

Ping's left hand suffered a comminuted fracture and hospital treatment has cost him nearly 20,000 yuan (US$3,088).

According to Liu Weijie, an officer at the Yucheng County Police Bureau, the two men were indeed their colleagues named Hou Kun and Zhao Peng. They are still on the run.
