2 dead, 2 missing in new round of rainstorms
TWO people have been killed and two are missing following a new spate of rainstorms in southern China.
As of 10am yesterday, one person had been killed and two were missing after downpours swept 59 counties in the southwestern province of Guizhou, said the provincial flood control headquarters. Nearly 400 houses had collapsed.
The heaviest rainfall recorded was just over 200 millimeters in 24 hours from 8am Monday in Tongzhi County. Water in a river there rose 1.14 meters above warning levels.
The storms affected 156,000 people and caused direct economic losses of 120 million yuan (US$19.2m).
Rain was forecast to continue until last night in Guizhou.
Rainstorms also hit nine cities in the central province of Hunan Province, said the provincial flood control authorities.
A 61-year-old man died after a landslide flattened his house on Monday in Xinhua County. The downpours saw 20,000 people evacuated and the collapse of 1,305 houses in Hunan.
At least 37 people died and six were left missing after downpours in south China in May, said the China National Commission for Disaster Reduction.
