2 deaths in Langfang hushed up
Two workers' deaths at a north China Foxconn factory earlier this year were covered up for months, not confirmed by officials until yesterday.
Rong Bo, 19, fell to his death in January from a dormitory building at Foxconn's mobile phone factory in Langfang City, Hebei Province.
Forty-five days later, 16-year-old Wang Lingyan was found dead in bed on her first day at the same factory, of what doctors said was a heart attack, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
In the factory of more than 30,000 employees, their deaths were a forbidden topic for more than three months.
The factory reportedly asked the Party boss of Anci District, where the factory is located, to help cover up their deaths. The factory sent a letter to Foxconn headquarters in Taiwan, saying "the victims' families were taken care of, the press was under control, and there's no need to worry," Xinhua said.
A worker at the factory surnamed Li said Rong's face was smashed and unrecognizable after he jumped. The factory had to round up all the workers and see who was missing. Other workers were told that Rong committed suicide and he died a peaceful death.
Yet Rong's father Rong Fanying insisted his son was killed. He said his son would know better than to kill himself. A detail reinforced his doubts: Beside Rong Bo's bed was a note that read, "You are a bastard."
But Rong Fanying said he gave up the right to dig deeper into his son's death when he took 150,000 yuan from the company and agreed to remain silent. Foxconn has not completed the payment, Rong said.
Wang's death was even more mysterious. The day after she registered into Foxconn's Langfang factory, she didn't wake up. Langfang People's Hospital said she died from a heart attack.
Wang had called her parents twice when she was accepted by Foxconn on February 22.
She sounded happy but grumbled a little it was hard to talk to her roomies, who spoke different dialects, said Wang's father Wang Jianpo.
She had shown the recruitment official a fake ID card that said she was 22. Her family was compensated only 110,000 yuan (US$16,100) because of the trick.
