2 deny killing Chinese mainland tourist
Two men denied beating a Chinese mainland tourist to death over a shopping dispute when they appeared in court in Hong Kong yesterday.
Hong Kong tour guide Wu Yin-nam, 44, and Shenzhen tour escort Liu Yang, 32, were charged with killing Miao Chunqi, 54, outside a jewelry store in Kowloon on Monday, news website stheadline reported.
At Kowloon City Magistrates’ Courts, prosecutors said videos showed several men punching and kicking Miao and Zhang Lixia, 53, his colleague and travel companion.
Wu told the court he had kicked Miao but said he was just trying to prevent the situation escalating.
Liu denied hitting anyone but said that he had dragged Zhang out of the store.
Liu didn’t apply for a bail while Wu’s bail request was rejected because of the serious nature of the charges.
The court adjourned until December 22 to allow time for further police inquiries, an autopsy and forensics examinations, South China Morning Post reported.
Miao, from northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, was said to be trying to mediate a confrontation between Zhang and tour escort Deng Haiyan, 32, over Zhang’s refusal to make a purchase at the store.
Police called to the scene found Miao unconscious. He died in hospital the following morning.
Two women who were arrested for fighting in a public place have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
