2 detained over factory blast
TWO men have been placed in criminal detention following an explosion at a chemical factory in Guangzhou City, capital of southern Guangdong Province.
The explosion at the No. 6 warehouse of Futian Chemical Corporation in Panyu District happened after workers had unloaded chemicals last Thursday. No one was injured.
The two under detention are Futian's director of safety and a forklift truck driver.
Zhou Dafu, director of the Panyu Safety Supervision Bureau, said a pack of peroxide had burst into flames and led to the explosaion.
Witnesses said the blast released a huge cloud of hydrogen chloride. More than 6,000 residents near the site were evacuated.
No serious environmental pollution has been detected so far around the explosion site, the China News Service reported. The Panyu district government said the amount of hydrogen chloride in the air around the blast site had dropped to zero by yesterday.
Last weekend, about 40 residents of Wenbian Village, site of the factory, had taken part in a protest to demand the plant move out of town.
The Panyu government also said they had suggested the Guangzhou city government move the company out of the district. On November 16, it had ordered the plant to stop using the warehouse as it did not have a license to store dangerous chemicals.
