2 die in fight over demolition

A MAN alleged to have killed two demolition workers in a brawl in Suzhou has been taken into custody for intentional injury, police said yesterday.

Another six people — all colleagues of the dead workers — have been detained for stirring up trouble as they had beaten up the man’s wife and son just before the killing, police said.

An initial investigation showed that six workers from a demolition company had visited Fan Mugen’s house on Tuesday morning to talk about relocation. But Fan and his wife refused to talk to them.

Police said a quarrel broke out and Fan is believed to have threatened the workers with a knife. They called their manager, surnamed Liu, and Fan phoned his son.

Liu came accompanied by two men, one surnamed Hu and one surnamed Wu, who were carrying sticks, police said.

Fan’s son and several other relatives also arrived and a fight broke out.

Liu and his two companions started beating Fan’s son and wife. Fan stabbed Hu in the chest and then attacked Liu, police said.

Hu was dead on arrival at hospital and Liu died later.

Former neighbors told China News Service that 65-year-old Fan became a farmer after he retired from the army. He had started lodging complaints to higher authorities over demolition issues in 2004 and he had been to Beijing twice to petition the authorities.

Demolition began in Yanshan Village in 2003, the former villagers said, and Fan and his wife were the only people who still lived there.
