2 drowned when floodgate releases water

TWO students in southwest China's Sichuan Province were killed by flood on Wednesday noon when the floodgate on the Outer River of Dujiangyan was opened to discharge water into the Minjiang River, Huaxi Metropolitan Daily reported.

The two victims were students of Sichuan Agriculture University. They were having picnic with six friends on the bank of the Minjiang River when the floodgate was lifted at 11:30am.

The water level of the Minjiang River rose rapidly and washed four of them away. Two students managed to swim ashore while a girl was founded after several minutes but it was too late to save her. At about 3pm, the body of the last missing boy student was founded downstream.

A witness, surnamed Luo, told the newspaper that the floodgate routinely opens and local residents have got used to it. However, there were still some people taking risk to play on the bank.
