2 ex-officials executed for graft
TWO former vice mayors in east China, convicted of corruption and taking millions of yuan in bribes, were executed yesterday.
They were Xu Maiyong, 52, former vice mayor of Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, and Jiang Renjie, 62, former vice mayor of Suzhou, a city in Jiangsu Province.
Xu and Jiang, who both ran development projects in affluent coastal cities, became rare cases in which high-ranking officials are dealt the ultimate penalty for graft.
Xu was executed for taking 145 million yuan (US$22.31 million) in bribes, embezzling 53 million yuan and abusing power.
Nicknamed "Plenty Xu" because he possessed a lot of money, houses and mistresses, Xu accepted and sought bribes from 14 companies and individuals in return for helping them get government projects, evade taxes, obtain land and get government jobs, China News Service reported.
The offenses took place from 1995 to 2009, when he was vice mayor of Xiaoshan City, which is supervised by Hangzhou, head of Xihu District of Hangzhou and vice mayor of Hangzhou. When he was the director of Xihu District, he illegally helped companies get refunds of 71 million yuan.
Xu and his wife, Qi Jiqiu, are reported to have owned several apartments nationwide.
Qi, a former real estate developer, has been accused of helping Xu cover up the source of 41.3 million yuan Xu obtained illegally. Qi is also accused of taking 3.12 million yuan in bribes. She is currently on trial.
Jiang was found guilty of accepting 108.57 million yuan, HK$50,000 and US$4,000 in bribes from property developers between 2001 and 2004.
Jiang was in charge of urban planning, construction, transportation, communications and housing in Suzhou.
