2 held after rail worker killed on train
Two railway workers have been detained following an incident in which train crew members allegedly beat another rail worker to death on a train over the weekend, the railway ministry said yesterday.
The fight occurred shortly before midnight on Sunday when the K256 train from Shenzhen in southern China's Guangdong Province to Hefei in the eastern Anhui Province stopped at Longnan station in Jiangxi Province.
Rail officials said three railway workers got on and had a quarrel with train attendants about seats.
One worker was injured during the fight and was later pronounced dead, said the railway authorities.
The official announcement came after rumors from witnesses spread online, alleging a passenger was beaten to death in the fight.
The ministry has demanded an explanation over what happened.
Twenty passengers who witnessed the fight signed their names or left their fingerprints on a testimony.
One witness, surnamed Lai, said a passenger quarreled with a conductor and a middle-aged man tried to intervene.
A uniformed beverage seller punched the middle-aged man in the face and strangled him, while two other members of staff struck the man repeatedly, Lai told Jiangxi TV.
The man died before an ambulance arrived, the Ganzhou Emergency Rescue Center said.
Police said they were conducting an autopsy on the dead man.
Two attendants present at the incident were allowed home after questioning.
Insiders said the dead man was a worker with a cleaning company affiliated to Nanchang Railway Bureau in Jiangxi and was from Jiangxi.
The Shanghai Railway Bureau, which is in charge of rail operations in Jiangxi, said the train service was not affected by the incident.
