2 injured in NE China aftershock

Two people have been injured after an aftershock jolted Songyuan City in northeast China's Jilin Province at around this noon, local authorities said.

The injured are being treated in a hospital, according to the local government.

A 4.5-magnitude aftershock hit Qian Gorlos Mongol Autonomous County in the city at 12:26 p.m. Its depth was 10 km, with its epicenter located at 44.7 degrees north latitude and 124.1 degrees east longitude, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The aftershock came after two earthquakes hit the county on Thursday.

The epicenter of today's aftershock was in Chaganhua Town in the county, according to sources with the city's seismological bureau.

The aftershock lasted for five seconds and was felt strongly, according to local residents.

The two consecutive earthquakes on Thursday measured 5.5 and 5.0 magnitude respectively. The two quakes left 12 people injured and affected more than 35,000 people in Songyuan.

About 20,000 residents were relocated and 5,000 homes were damaged in Thursday's quakes. Some of the damaged buildings collapsed after today's aftershock, said the seismological bureau.

Experts with the Jilin provincial seismological bureau confirmed today's earthquake was a strong aftershock of the earlier quakes.
