2 injured in unlicensed student driver hit-and-run

POLICE this weekend detained an unlicensed student driver who allegedly crashed into two pedestrians and then fled the scene in Changsha, the capital of south China's Hunan Province.

A 19-year-old man has been admitted at a local hospital's intensive care unit with serious injuries to the head, abdomen, chest and legs. "He is in very serious condition and his life hangs by a thread this week," a doctor at the hospital said.

A girl was slightly hurt in the incident.

The accident happened at 4am on Saturday and the 22-year-old driver, surnamed Ma, who first fled the scene handed himself over to the police at 10pm that day, reported Xiaoxiang Morning Herald.

Ma allegedly offered to pay 1 million yuan (US$156,578 dollars) to "smooth things over." He had bought the new car just five days before the accident.

"I am taking the driving test and I just wanted to test the car," Ma said.

The injured man, surnamed Zou is the only son of their family. His father said: "The driver has no conscience that he struck the man and run away."
