2 killed, 8 in hospital as SUV rams into crowd at night market

TWO people died and eight others were hospitalized after a luxury car smashed into a crowd at a night market in northeastern China late yesterday, Heilongjiang Morning News reported today.

Zhang Xijun, 50, ran over the feet of two girls with his Land Rover SUV near Yeshi Bridge of Jixi City in Heilongjiang Province. The girls stood in front of the SUV and stopped the driver, who smelled of alcohol, Zhang Liwen, a witness and policeman on his way back home from work, told the newspaper.

The families of the two girls fought with the driver. Zhang stopped them and persuaded the families to take the girls to hospital for treatment, the report said.

The SUV then rushed towards the crowd, running into 26 people and knocking a snack stall into the air. The SUV finally stopped in front of a barbecue stall. Two of those people were killed and eight others were hospitalized. The others had minor injuries, the report said.

Police rushed to the site in minutes while people were beating the driver with clubs, the report said.
The report didn't say whether the driver was detained.
