2 killed after boats collide off Hong Kong
A COLLISION between a sand barge and a container vessel off Hong Kong left two barge crew dead and six missing early yesterday.
Hong Kong's Assistant Director of Marine Chung Siu-man said police received a report at 3:15am that a barge with 14 crew members and a container vessel with nine crew members had collided east of Tung Lung Chau.
The barge capsized and sank off the southern tip of the island. Seven male barge crew were taken to hospital. One was pronounced dead, one is in a stable condition while the other five have been treated and discharged.
Rescuers later found another crew member, but he was declared dead on arrival at hospital. The container vessel crew are all safe.
Chung said both vessels were registered on the Chinese mainland and all crew members were from the mainland.
