2 miners killed, 9 trapped in Hebei

TWO miners were killed and another nine trapped underground following a gas explosion yesterday in a colliery in north China's Hebei Province, provincial work safety authorities said.

Eighteen people were working in the shaft when the accident occurred at about 1pm at Dadi Coal Mine in Chengde County of Chengde City. Seven people escaped, according to the Hebei work safety administration.

The mine's production license expired in June 2006, and the mine was suspended from production for rectification, the administration said.

Rescue work has been launched and investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

Meanwhile, 10 workers trapped in a collapsed railway tunnel in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region might still be alive, rescuers said yesterday.

"The tunnel is not totally caved in. There is room inside for the workers to survive," said Wang Faling, a technician in charge of the rescue.

Drilling of a horizontal passage will be completed soon, allowing rescuers to get in. Around 60 medical workers and 10 ambulances were waiting, said Wang.
