2 pay to bury infants
POLICE in south China's Guangdong Province have detained a father and a grandfather who allegedly hired people to bury living newborn twin girls because they couldn't afford to treat the babies' heart disease and mental disorder.
The seven-day-old babies were now being treated in incubators of a maternity and children's hospital after being sent there by a woman surnamed Li on October 1.
Weighing roughly 1.2 kilograms, the babies were diagnosed with pneumonia, congenital heart disease and a propensity for future mental illness, reported yesterday's Yangcheng Evening News. The doctors told Li it would take at least 100,000 yuan (US$15,000) to cure the diseases - which led the babies' biological father to desert them.
The father and grandfather gave the babies to a man nicknamed Uncle He, who took charge of local funerals, asking him to bury the babies' corpses. Uncle He found the girls were still breathing and urged the two to take them home.
However, the men went away and never came back. Uncle He then laid the babies in front of a temple, where Li offered to take care of the girls. She also called police.
