2 people injured as gunman holds 10 hostage in cafe

A GUNMAN who held “more than 10 people” hostage for eight hours in an Internet cafe in east China’s Anhui Province is in custody after surrendering to police.

The siege began after the suspect, identified as Tu, refused to stop at a police checkpoint in the city of Lu’an about 10am yesterday, Anhui TV reported.

When officers indicated to Tu to pull over, the suspect took out a handgun and waved it at them, before driving away in his minivan, the report said.

During the ensuing car chase through the city, Tu fired several times at his pursuers, injuring two passersby in the process, police were quoted as saying.

The chase came to an end after about 30 minutes, when Tu stopped his vehicle, got out and ran inside an Internet cafe, they said.

The injured bystanders, both women, were taken to hospital and are said to be in a stable condition.

Police cordoned off the building and snipers were positioned nearby, the report said.

Negotiators appealed to Tu to surrender, but after failing to make any progress “some of his relatives” were sent inside the cafe about 2:25pm in a bid to get him to come out, the report said.

The siege came to a halt at 6:35pm, when Tu gave himself up and all of the hostages were freed, police said.

Local news website ahwang.cn claimed that Tu was shot during the eight-hour hostage episode with another report suggesting that Tu is a native of Lu’an and aged in his 30s.
