2 police jailed for fatal Gansu bus crash

TWO police officers have been sent to prison for dereliction of duty in relation to the bus crash in northwest China’s Gansu Province in 2011, in which 22 people died, a court said yesterday.

The former head of traffic police in Zhengning County, surnamed Gou, was given a three-year prison term in a final judgment on Tuesday, said the Qingyang Municipal Intermediate People’s Court.

The second officer — Gou’s former deputy, surnamed Wang — was sentenced to three years in prison with four years’ probation, the court said in a statement.

Twenty-two people, including 20 preschoolers from a privately run kindertargen, died when the school bus, a nine-seater van that was illegally converted to hold 64 people, collided with a truck in November 2011. A further 42 children were injured.

The incident provoked criticism of school bus safety in the country’s rural areas, where children are often required to travel long distances to and from school.

Li Jungang, chairman of the Little Doctor Kindergarten in Zhengning County in the city of Qingyang and owner of the ill-fated school bus, was sentenced to seven years in prison in July 2012.
