2 students die in Hubei
TWO sudden deaths in three days have been reported in the central province of Hubei during ongoing freshman military training.
Xu Xun of Hubei University of Economics, based in provincial capital Wuhan, died on the first day of training on Friday.
Xu felt dizzy and fell to the ground without consciousness, only 10 minutes after the night training started at 6:30pm.
He was sent to hospital immediately but pronounced dead no more than two hours after.
Two days earlier, a female student in another Wuhan college passed out during the training and was later declared brain dead.
Xia Hao, a cardiology professor in the People's Hospital of Wuhan University, said students with a family history of sudden or early death or cardiac abnormalities should be more careful. So should students "diagnosed with diseases not suitable for strenuous exercise."
Xu had passed physical examination by the university ahead of the military training, according to a relative of his surnamed Zheng.
"He played basketball every day," Zheng said. Doctors said he died before arrival at hospital and the reason was unidentified.
