2 survive, 7 dead after building collapses
TWO people were rescued but seven others were found dead after a residential building collapsed in Wenzhou in east China’s Zhejiang Province, local authorities said yesterday.
Part of the five-story building in the village of Dahui collapsed on Thursday morning, burying nine members of two families.
A 63-year-old woman was pulled from the debris around 10:40pm on Thursday and another female survivor was rescued at 7am yesterday. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.
A ninth person buried was found dead at 10am yesterday.
With the help of eight cranes and excavators, more than 400 paramilitary officers, firefighters, township officials and medical workers were involved in the rescue operation.
“The scene is quite chaotic, as if the place was leveled by an earthquake,” a rescuer said. “We had to work very carefully because the wreckage of the ruined building is joined to homes still standing.”
A total of 58 people living nearby were evacuated, and local authorities have launched an investigation into the collapse.
