2 urban management leaders fired over death tragedy

TWO senior urban management officers in northeast China's Liaoning Province were sacked after three subordinates were detained for beating a resident to death.

Ma Chuang, director of the Hongwei District Urban Management Bureau in Liaoyang City, and Ling Xin, deputy director, were removed from their jobs, according to an announcement made by the district government yesterday.

District officials have visited the family of Zhou Xiaoming, who was beaten to death following a quarrel with three officers on May 3. The family received 20,000 yuan (US$3,073), the first payment of compensation by the officials, Xinhua reported today.

Workers were building a cement path to Zhou's house when they were forced to stop by the three officers. When Zhou arrived, they started a quarrel which erupted into a fight. Zhou was beaten to death on the spot.
