2 women detained in Qingdao for fabricating bakery cake story
TWO elderly women from Qingdao have been detained after they fabricated a video about a bakery using cotton instead of meat floss as fillings inside cakes.
Wang, 61, and Huang, 65, will be detained for five days, police said.
According to police, Huang went to Wang's house after she bought some meat floss cakes from a bakery on Feixian Road in Qingdao City, Shandong Province, on May 22. Having seen a "cotton meat floss" video online, the two took the meat floss from the cake and soaked it in water. They then used a cellphone to film it, "washed" the meat floss and claimed it was cotton after it turned white.
They then released the video on WeChat.
Shandong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau then tested the cake from the bakery, and found no cotton in it.
Gao Hongwei, the chief of the test lab, said they tested samples from the meat floss from the bakery "Jiangnan Pastry" twice in three days, and gave it a clean chit.
Meanwhile, Shinan District Food and Drug Administration investigated the bakery's meat floss supplier. They found the Anhui-based food company was a licensed meat floss producing firm. The meat floss they sold to the bakery was made of dried chicken, sugar and other edible things.
Wu, the manager of the bakery which suspended its business during the investigation, said they planned to resume sales soon.
