20 in hospital after ammonia leak in Henan

ABOUT 20 people were rushed to the hospital after synthetic ammonia leaked from a pipeline in Pingdingshan City in Henan Province, local authorities said yesterday.

The pipeline transferring ammonia gas in Henan Zhonghong Coal Chemical Company started leaking around 6:30am. About 300 kilograms of ammonia leaked before the rupture was blocked 15 minutes later, according to a statement released by the Shilong District government.

Among those rushed to the hospital, five of them were said to be in critical condition.

The statement said environmental tests carried out after the leak found no traces of ammonia in the air.

Residents in Xiangzhuang Village told Beijing News they heard a loud explosion and saw fog-like white smoke with strong smell.

Witnesses said villagers, including children, fell unconscious while some of them coughed blood. More than 100 pigs in a livestock farm were foaming at the mouth, the newspaper said.

A local television showed dogs, sparrows and frogs lying on ground.
