200 Chinese workers trapped
MORE than 200 Chinese nationals working in Nepal remain trapped after Saturday’s earthquake, a Ministry of Commerce spokesman said yesterday.
The people were working on a hydropower project for China International Water and Electric Corp close to the China-Nepal border, which was severely damaged by the tremor, said spokesman Shen Danyang.
A 16-person team from the Tibet Autonomous Region has reached the project site and is leading the rescue attempt, Shen said, without elaborating.
However, the quake relief headquarters in Jilung County in Tibet, which is near the damaged site, said that 25 of more than 200 Chinese stranded in the hydropower station were yesterday airlifted to safety aboard a Chinese helicopter.
Two people were confirmed dead.
Meanwhile, Chinese aid workers are doing all they can to help in Nepal, including making shelters from water-proof fabrics, Shen said.
The Chinese government pledged 20 million yuan (US$3.3 million) in humanitarian aid to Nepal.
The consignment, which includes tents, blankets and electricity generators, should reach the Nepalese capital Kathmandu by today, Shen said.
