200 competitors ready to contest race on the river
RESIDENTS of Changsha, capital of central China’s Hunan Province, are in for a Dragon Boat Festival treat this year as the city hosts the Xiangjiang River International Regatta Race.
More than 200 competitors from about 70 teams — including Russian Ruedo, Australian Yachting Queensisland, Italian Sunail Racing and Chinese Gele Mountain — will contest the event.
“It is the first time that such an international scale regatta race has been held on an inland river,” said Su Ke, secretary-general of the Chinese Sailing Association.
“We hope the success of the race will help to promote the sport of sailing throughout China,” he said.
After the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games, sailing has become more popular in China, especially in eastern and southern coastal cities like Qingdao, Sanya, Xiamen and Shenzhen.
The China Cup regatta, which was first staged in 2007 and is held once a year, is the biggest sailing event in Asia.
Zhong Yong, deputy secretary -general of the China Cup regatta and technical supervisor for the Xiangjiang race said that sailing on the river is more challenging than on the sea.
“And that will provide an unparalleled opportunity for local residents to experience the race,” he said.
Competing boats will race around Juzizhou Island on the River.
Spectators along about 12.5 kilometers of the riverbank will have a clear view of the race, Su said.
“We believe the race will inspire spectators’ interest in the sport,” he said.
