2,076 officials punished for fund misuse
CHINA’S top anti-corruption watchdog punished 2,076 officials for offenses related to the misappropriation of public funds during February, 2.64 percent less than in January.
In February China observed the Spring Festival, a holiday often associated with large banquets and the exchange of expensive presents. Over recent years, amid mounting concern over wasteful government spending, authorities have called for more frugality among officials during the festival while also clamping down on misuse of taxpayer money.
Cases of officials squandering public money on meals were up nearly 30 percent in February from a month earlier, according to figures issued yesterday by the China’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI).
Meanwhile, cases of officials misusing public funds for overseas travel dropped by 75 percent over the same period.
Automobiles, excessive bonuses and lavish ceremonies were identified by the commission as the three biggest sources of wasteful spending.
The CCDI said 551 officials were punished in February for illegal use of government vehicles, with many used for non-official purposes.
Authorities also recorded 508 cases of overly generous annual bonuses going to officials and their subordinates in January and February.
Cases involving extravagant wedding and funeral ceremonies for officials and their families were tallied at 230 during February, down from 248 the previous month.
Included with these figures were statements calling for tighter monitoring of public funds and more prudent spending by officials.
Authorities began cracking down on wasteful public spending in early 2013. By the end of 2014, over 100,000 officials had been punished under tougher laws against misuse of funds, data show.
