21 Zhejiang villages flooded after levees broke

At least 21 villages in the eastern Zhejiang Province were inundated with floods after the levees of several lakes broke yesterday, affecting more than 5,000 people but casualties were reported, Xinhua said today.

The flood control headquarters of Zhuji City said heavy downpours caused several small lakes in Jiangzao Town to burst their banks around 6:40am, flooding 18 villages and stranding more than 2,500 people.

At about 1:30pm, the dike of the Jiefang Lake in Diankou Town broke by swelling water, forcing 2,516 villagers to evacuate immediately. One house collapsed in the flood.

The Zhuji City Civil Affairs Department has distributed relief materials valued at over 300,000 yuan to the affected villagers and more aid materials will be dispatched to them later.
