21 held after toxic glue killed 4 workers, sickened 34
POLICE in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, have detained 21 suspects for making and selling toxic glue which killed four people and poisoned 34 others, local media reported today.
Of the 28 victims being treated in the Guangzhou No. 12 People's Hospital, 25 were confirmed to be poisoned by the glue used for making leather goods, according to today's Nanfang Daily.
The victims, all migrant workers aged between 15 and 50, are hospitalized and 16 of them are in critical condition, said Liu Yimin, vice president of the hospital.
They felt sick last year after handling the inferior glue in their shoe and bag workshops in the city's Baiyun and Liwan districts. Most of their workshops are ill-ventilated and are unlicensed. Dichloroethane, a chemical compound used to make glue, is highly poisonous, the paper said.
Guangzhou product safety watchdog said they have closed 515 illegal workshops and the incidence of glue poisoning has been brought under control. No new case has been reported since January 30.
