21% increase in Chinese student numbers in US
A RECORD 235,000 Chinese students were enrolled by United States universities and colleges in the 2012-2013 semester year, US officials said yesterday.
This is a 21 percent increase on the previous year, said EducationUSA, a US Department of State-supported body working with embassies and consulates to provide information on applying to US colleges.
“Chinese students and their parents believe that degrees from US universities and colleges are good investments for their future careers,” Mona Locke, special advisor and spokeswoman for EducationUSA, said.
And more Shanghai residents — especially students — have applied for visas to go to the United States in the past year, US officials said.
The US Consulate in Shanghai issued some 46,000 visas in the year up to the end of last month.
Some 95 percent of applications were accepted — some five percentage points higher than in other Chinese cities.
The United States has some 4,000 universities which can accept international students — far more than for other countries, another reason for many Chinese students to study in the US.
Chinese students currently account for only 3.9 percent of international students in US universities.
US President Barack Obama announced the “100,000 Strong” initiative in 2009, intended to strengthen exchanges between American and Chinese students.
