21 miners killed in gas blast
Rescue workers back on the surface after it was announced that 21 miners had died after a gas explosion early yesterday in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The blast happened at 1:26am at the Baiyanggou coal mine in Hutubi County in Hui Autonomous Prefecture of Changji, when 34 miners were working underground. Twelve escaped and rescuers had been trying to free 22 others trapped. Only one survived. Mining accidents are common in China, the world’s largest consumer of coal. Last year, 1,384 people were killed in mining accidents, down from 1,973 in 2011. — Xinhua
