22 held in Harbin for ruining 6 family houses

The 22 men who forcibly torn down six houses to drive tenants out in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province last Wednesday have been detained by police.

Their fugitive leader Song Liqiang has surrendered himself to police in Haikou, southern Hainan Province, Harbin officials said in a press conference yesterday.

Song was hired by a demolition company to get rid of the holdout tenants in the six houses. In order to get his money sooner, Song decided to partially damage the six houses to force the tenants out, Xinhua news agency reported.

Song used 3,000 yuan (US$476) to rent two excavators and another 15,000 yuan to hire the men and a van. They began damaging the houses around 9:30pm and carried two tenants out by force, Xinhua said.

The case will be transferred to the judicial department, investigation officials said.
