23 China mainland colleges in top 500
TWENTY-THREE Chinese mainland universities squeezed into the best 500 universities in the 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities, better known as the Shanghai Ranking.
National Taiwan University, Chinese University of Hong Kong and Tsinghua University are the top three Chinese universities and also entered the Top 200 worldwide.
American universities won the majority of the top 10 places and nearly half of the top 100. British universities won two spots in the top 10.
Harvard University topped the list for the ninth consecutive year. The other Top 10 universities are: Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, Cambridge, Caltech, Princeton, Columbia, Chicago and Oxford.
In continental Europe, ETH Zurich (23rd) in Switzerland takes first place, followed by Paris-Sud (40th) and Pierre and Marie Curie (41st) in France.
The top-ranked universities in Asia are University of Tokyo (21st) and Kyoto University (27th) in Japan.
Tsinghua University in Beijing is the best among all domestic universities and is listed between 151st and 200th place. Peking University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Science and Technology of China and Zhejiang University are ranked among the top 300.
"We didn't precisely rank the universities out of the top 100 because of their minor gap between each other," said Cheng Ying, executive director of the center.
Domestic universities in China performed best in the area of research, as some are among the top 100 in the publication category. But few of their research papers are cited by other researchers and win international recognition, according to the researchers.
More than 1,000 universities were evaluated, and the best 500 were published by ARWU.
The ranking evaluates universities' performance via six objective indicators, including the number of staff and alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.
The report is transparent because researchers got all the data from a third-party organization, Cheng said.
