23 arrested in bogus medicine case

POLICE in central China have arrested 23 people for allegedly making bogus capsules using sawdust and flavorings with an estimated worth of nearly 10 million yuan (US$1.52 million).

The suspects bought equipment to manufacture bogus or adulterated drugs in Hubei and Shaanxi provinces last May. The capsules, low in real ingredients, were labeled like products from 130 pharmaceutical companies, Chutian Jinbao reported today.

With faked licenses and invoices, the suspects sold their capsules through a distribution network covering 20 provinces in China. They also sold fake medicines through the Internet, police of Jingzhou City said.

A main suspect surnamed Yang said she started the business with her relatives and her husband was arrested on the same charge two months ago.

The case came to light after the Food and Drug Administration of Jingzhou City received a report from a man whose wife bought drugs worth of 4,380 yuan last June. Li found the drugs had no batch number or production date. The case was immediately transferred to local police.
