23 kids to leave hospital as blood lead falls to normal level
HEALTH authority of Anhui Province said the blood lead levels of 23 children suffering lead poisoning have dropped to the normal range and they will be discharged from the hospital soon.
Venous blood tests conducted on Wednesday by the Anhui Provincial Center for Disease Control showed their heavy metal levels were normal, Anhui Provincial Health Bureau said in a statement on Thursday.
The statement ran counter to the one released on the same day by Huaining County government, which said 28 children had been admitted into the Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital for lead poisoning treatment on Tuesday.
The county government said the Borui Battery Co Ltd and the Guangfa Battery Plant near the Xinshan community in Gaohe Town are the culprits of lead poisoning. Both have been shut down.
When asked why the test results given by the Provincial Children's Hospital and the Center for Disease Control are different, a health bureau official said the center collected blood samples from the veins and its test result was more accurate, Oriental Morning Post reported today.
Three children from Xinshan were found to have elevated lead level in their blood at the Children's Hospital on December 24. Subsequent checks on 280 children from the community showed that more than 200 of them had high levels of the poisonous metal, Huaining County government said.
