23 killed in tunnel crash
TWENTY-THREE construction workers died in a road accident in northwest China's Gansu Province yesterday.
A vehicle carrying railway builders overturned in a mountain tunnel at 7:30am in Lintao County, the Gansu Provincial Work Safety Administration said in a statement. The tunnel was still under construction as part of a railway.
Twenty-one workers were killed instantly and seven others were rushed to Dingxi People's Hospital.
"Two died after emergency surgery. The other five are still in a serious condition," said Zhang Xueming, head of the hospital.
An initial investigation found that a brake failure was to blame for the accident, a spokesman with the local railway authority said.
