23 suspects in Guangdong have mouths taped to prevent collusion, police say
TWENTY-THREE burglary suspects had their mouths taped when they were locked together in a detention room early Saturday morning in Huizhou city in south China's Guangdong Province, the Southern Metropolis Daily newspaper said.
A police officer said the measure was taken to avoid collusion in their statements before interrogation — the suspects came from remote Weng’an Town in southwest China's Guizhou Province and police would not understand what they were saying in their local dialect if they were colluding with each other, the newspaper said.
A lawyer at the Shangdian Law Firm suggested that there may be better ways to prevent collusion, although there are no clear laws or regulations prohibiting the taping of their mouths.
The gang is accused of committing hundreds of burglaries by breaking and entering or smearing Super Glue on a fishing pole to lift money from a room. They were caught in a mahjong parlor in Huizhou city, police said.
